Midterm Proposal

For my final project midterm proposal, I will be addressing immigration issues regarding the Travel Ban that was issued in 2017. I will create a mobile using origami, string, and other support mediums for my art piece.
Here is a very loose and messy sketch of the mobile that will eventually become my art piece.

My complaint is why are innocent individuals not allowed into the country just because a few others have done some crimes that they have not done. One bad person does not represent the whole country and its people!

I want to inform people about the results of the Travel Ban today and why it is an issue. Though the government has stated that the ban was implemented for national security reasons, it is obvious that it was backed with racial thoughts. Most of the countries banned are of majority-Muslim countries. With the rise of Islamophobia, Trump and Congress has used the reasons for "possible terrorism" to ban some of the countries on the list. Some others were banned for not having a stable government or not cooperating with the U.S government.

This proves to be unfair for innocent individuals who wish to come to the United States out of protection or a new start at life. This CNN article has a short video on the perspective of married couples being separated because one is American and the other is Iranian. With the ban in place, they are either not allowed, or could take multiple years to get their papers reviewed and approved to enter the United States.

Many famous museums such as MoMA and Guggenheim have protested against the ban by promoting Muslim artists and spreading awareness by having artists express their opinions through posters. The MoMA replaced artworks by Western artists and replaced them with some of the artwork seen above. As a caption, it says, "This work is by an artist from a nation whose citizens are being denied entry into the United States, according to a presidential executive order issued on Jan. 27, 2017. This is one of the several such artworks from the Museum's collection installed throughout the fifth-floor galleries to affirm the ideals of welcome and freedom as vital to this Museum as they are to the United States."
