Who do you think you are

In today's world, the media has evolved into so many various mediums. They change as the world changes. I believe that the role I play is based on critique and consumption. I tend to choose the form of media that speaks to me the most and grabs my attention. I prefer working from behind the scenes. The events, stories and pictures shared are confined into the space we choose it to be. For example, Instagram, Facebook and the rest are mostly platforms we share with people we know or share common interests thus major events and stories stay in that circle. The events and stories plus pictures shared will be based upon the people we choose to follow and care about their views.

The recent news that came up was the violence that was taking place in South Africa with Nigerians. I barely watch the news and if it weren't for a blogger that I follow on Instagram, i wouldn't have known about it. The news stations in this country do not exclusively cover and follow the stories happening in other parts of the world. Social media helps bridge that gap. The media like CNN, would cover the stories of what they want to share with the public.
The protests against xenophobia in South Africa are best viewed on social platforms where you get to personally here some of the locals sharing their opinion and pain through there social media accounts. As much as the media reaches the masses, the best experience and stories come from those experiencing the events on their own.  Through social media, the government officials will truly know how their people feel and be able to act accordingly. I feel that all forms of protests and events need to be shared in as much forms as possible to gain the response needed.
According to the journal of dispute resolution,  "coverage generally disparages protesters and hinders their role as vital actors on the political stage." This quote supports the idea that the media will share the stories of the protests and make the coverage seem as their own forgetting what it took for the protesters to group and rally each other to fight for what they believe in. Hence, people tend to turn to social media to look for the news they want to hear from sources they feel are reliable. Social media has a strong hold in today's youth society thus making it of high importance especially when sharing stories, events and pictures.
