I chose the infamous Banksy "Walled off hotel" which is considered a hotel with "The worst view in the world. Banksy often graffitis political views all over the world and often paints about the controversial wall that is placed in the west bank. The hotel is a form of artistic protest since all rooms point the wall where Palestinians are not allowed to pass. The section of the westbank has become a tourist destination ever since artist Banksy's resilience art on the walls. The hotel speaks for the people of occupied Palestine.

Who do you think you are?

I did a little research of my own to find out what media consumption meant and what was included within it. I found out that media consumption is the average entertainment media a consumer spends on the daily. It includes spending time reading books/magazines, watching TV/film, listening to the radio and interacting with new media. As a matter of fact, according to a study done in 2018, people spend an average of eleven hours per day on the media, which is insane to think about but we have all fallen victim to that and some even spend more than eleven hours... Crazy right!

My name is Genesis Serrano and my role in media cosumption and media making is allowing myself to be in cntrol of what I post or publish on social media, as well as having the freedom to infuence others through it. I personally am not as active on social media like Instagram, twitter, facebook, snapchat, whatsapp, etc., but when I do post something I like to post inspirational quotes along with a picture or video. I thinks its so awesome to inspire others, to motivate them to bring the best of themselves because we are all unique and beuatiful in our own ways. No one is perfect, we are all unperfectly perfect, meaning our flaws are what makes us who we are in this world. Sadly, that's not the case nowadays in our social media because there are images set forth by social media. For axample, the perfect body, the perfect relationship, the house "goals", freindship "goals", the perfect squad, the perfect nationality/race/ethnicity, the perfect job or status in a country. Therefore, not everything is positive on media. The sad part is that we are all involved with media in one way or another, being influenced by what we see or read which creates hate, discrimination, which leads women to feeling ugly or feeling like they need a thigh gap or to have wider hips, a bigger chest, etc., to feel sexy when that's not the case at all. Media is a great platform but when used icorrectly it poses a humongous threat to our society. My little sister came up to me the other day telling me how her friends idolize the body of this popular teen on social media called Maddie Ziegler. Many of her friends starve themselves trying to have their bodies look like hers... That's insane to me!

On a different note, the media also contains different forms of art works that are very interesting and have meaning to them. For example, Kara Walker who is an American contemporary painter,  silhouettist, print-maker, installation artist, and film-maker who explores race, gender, sexuality, violence, and identity in her work. This type of media i like because it allows people to look at the reality of the world swe live in. Here is a link to one of her art works that interested me and would love for you to check out how she depicts slavery and women's place in society.

In conclusion, social media is a wonderful form to interract with others, to use as a platform for many things like teaching others a certain skill, playing a song, for music, to bring awarness, among other positive things but lets try as media consumers not to use the media to create negative environments fr ourselves and our societies because the more we make oursleves believe those thigs the more it spreads like a contagious virus to our generations and the ones to come.

Art that challenges the status quo

Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair

Frida Kahlo
(Mexican, 1907–1954)
1940. Oil on canvas, 15 3/4 x 11" (40 x 27.9 cm)
Kahlo cut her hair short a month after her divorce from fellow artist Diego Rivera, and she painted this self-portrait soon after. Instead of one of the traditional Mexican dresses that she is often shown wearing, here she depicted herself wearing an over sized men’s suit and crimson shirt: which is thought to be possibly Rivera’s. Her masculine haircut and garments contrast with her delicate, dangling earrings and petite high-heeled shoes. Kahlo holds a pair of scissors in one hand and a lock of hair in the other, with hair scattered all over the floor. In the background, there is a sequence of musical notes. These are lyrics from a Mexican folk song that, when translated, read: “Look, if I loved you it was because of your hair. Now that you are without hair, I don’t love you anymore.”
For some, Kahlo may have made this portrait to mourn the absence of her ex-husband, who had been unfaithful (and whom she would remarry by the end of 1940). For others, this image is a declaration of Kahlo’s self-reliance and independence.

Who do you think you are?

I am Jhakeer Johnson and I am a media consumer. My media consumption involves Instagram  and looking at bespoke tailors make their masterpieces for satisfied customers.  Other media outlets I use are Facebook and Pinterest to keep-up with friends and  to look at shoes. Media has become a important part of our lives whether young or old. Media comes in different forms: Television, Phones, Computers  and etc. When it comes to things that are going in the world, that topic would be on one of these outlets of media.
Media consumption allows people to be entertained and informed simultaneously. On Instagram, my timeline has things that entertain me and on the next slot, there would be something informative and alerting people to take action, whether it be to help Bahamas with their natural disaster recovery or the black lives matter movement.
Media gives activist and acts of resistance a platform on national and International scale. News and/or activist have resorted to the media outlets such as Instagram or Facebook to get their point across to everyday civilians. No longer do people have to glance at the news channel. The news that I receive mostly comes from Instagram news and information seems to travel when it is spreader by social media.
The VMA's were in my hometown this year. While the celebrities were preparing to step foot on the red carpet, the residents of Newark were protesting for their legislature to act on their city being contaminated with lead. Hashtags were posted all over Instagram and  timelines were filled with the protestors fighting for clean water. The media is a world wide connection to all people and allows anyone to post what they want. when activist post  their agendas believe the world is going to see it especially if they have a large following.

Artists on Patriarchy

Judy ChicagoĆ¢€™s Dinner PartyJudy Chicago, a well-known artist for using topics of patriarchy and sexism, has many artworks that are popular today. The 80-year-old artist today still stands proud of her philosophy and beliefs towards equality. She uses her art to remind and teach these topics, how patriarchy has dominated the views of society or praising influential women throughout history (referred to in the picture).

The first artist that comes to mind when I think about an artist who addresses and challenges the status quo, patriarchy, and its systemic power and dominance is an amazing artist I've only just started to see on instagram a few weeks ago. Her name is Elizabeth Barreto who mostly paints murals. "...her goal as an artist is to touch on the realidad of Puerto Rican society in the midst of a revived feminist revolution, and collapse after Hurricane Maria." one of her many projects is the one below.

Caption: “Let’s kick ass! Against fear, silence, tyranny, oppression, inequality, gender and racial discrimination, sex abuse, the colonization of our bodies and minds. Against growing up in shaming and humiliation. We will not get tired of claiming what is rightfully ours every year, everyday. United we are powerful and we know it, the future knows it. And just because nobody has the right to tell me how to act like a PUERTO RICAN WOMAN!"
