Group 3: Gehad, Daniel, Joan and Wilfred

IMMIGRATION

Our project was inspired by an artist named, Patrick Martinez. We did not find anyone we would like to do in the book, so we searched up artists online and came to an agreement to one particular artist. Patrick Martinez was born in Pasadena, California and his work is inspired by signs that exist across the United States. Signs that we can also see outside of a liquor store, that illuminates at night and sometimes the sign will have a few letters illuminated that gives a whole different meaning. For example, instead of "NOTICE NO SOLICITING" it would say "NO ICE SOLICITING". We were inspired by his work because most of our family are immigrants that came from a different country to the United States in search for a better living situation. For our project, we interviewed our parent(s) about the struggles of being an immigrant and what they had to overcome when they moved to America. We asked the questions to our parent(s) in English but told them to answer them in our native language to make it feel authentic and added subtitles in English. We made a video because we wanted to find out the reasons behind why our parent(s) decided to immigrate to America. These are the questions we asked,

  • “What made you decide to move to the United States?”
  • “How did you have to adjust your way of living in the United States?"
  • “What did you think about when you first thought of the United States?”
  • “What type of struggles did you have to face going and living in the United States?
